Clear|The Game-Changer in Transparent Standards

Transparent cases always turn yellow, don’t they?

Have you ever experienced this? When you first buy a transparent phone case, you love the crystal-clear look that showcases your device’s details. But before long, that “pure transparency” begins to fade, creeping over with a dull, yellow haze.

You might think: “Maybe it’s just this brand’s problem. I’ll switch to another one.” Yet the same thing happens again. After just a few months, the new case also turns yellow. Over time, you compromise, convincing yourself that “transparent cases are meant to yellow,” especially when friends around you are holding equally yellowed cases.

The truth is, yellowing is not inevitable. It’s a problem consumers have long accepted, but one that shouldn’t have been compromised in the first place.

It was with the belief that "a clear case should remain clear” that RHINOSHIELD began in 2018 to search for a solution: a material technology that resists yellowing.

Three years of research & development: When the market accepted yellowing, we chose not to accept it.

In 2016, RHINOSHIELD released its first transparent product line, PlayProof. Like every other case on the market, it succumbed to yellowing. We discontinued the product, considering it a failed experiment, but also the starting point for Clear Case.

If we were to design another transparent case, the first challenge had to be: how to prevent yellowing.

Creating a transparent case itself isn’t difficult. Many brands pair a TPU frame with a PC backplate to quickly push products to market. But that doesn’t solve yellowing, nor does it meet our standards. Instead, we chose to search for materials that would not yellow over time.

Our development process considered multiple conditions: anti-yellowing performance, BPA-free safety, mono-material design, and military-grade drop protection. Standards that seem obvious today were major technical hurdles in 2018–2021.

Product development was like a race against time. Each iPhone generation brought new design challenges, and every shift required new engineering solutions. For example, the curved edges of iPhone 11 to the flat sides of iPhone 12. While other brands rushed cases to market, we raised the bar, refusing to compromise on quality.

Ultimately, we identified a medical-grade transparent material with exceptional stability in UV testing, dramatically reducing yellowing risk. But adopting this material proved far harder than expected, requiring countless design iterations before we balanced anti-yellowing performance with long-term stability.

Craftsmanship in flawless transparency

Most transparent cases feature tiny dot patterns on the inside to reduce bubbles or scratches where the phone touches the case. But these patterns compromise clarity.

We chose a stricter path: crafting Clear from a single anti-yellowing material, providing seamless protection, modular swappable buttons and lens frames, and a perfectly smooth surface. The result: no seams, no dots, no ripples. A flawless transparency that reflects our refusal to compromise.

The road was not easy. Without an in-house R&D facility at the time, we often faced skepticism and rejection from manufacturing partners. Those setbacks convinced us that building our own development center was the only way to fully realize our vision.

Patience as a form of commitment

Throughout the three years of R&D, consumer demand for a new transparent case was constant. The opportunity was huge. Yet we delayed launch until the product truly met our standards: anti-yellowing and clarity. Better to wait than compromise.

That decision gave rise to Clear Case.

Global validation and shifting the market

In 2021, RHINOSHIELD launched Clear Case. It passed SGS UV tests and survived 168 hours of extreme UV and heat-humidity trials without yellowing. It became the world’s first transparent phone case designed around anti-yellowing performance, initially with a five-year no-yellowing warranty, later upgraded to a lifetime anti-yellowing guarantee.

If a case yellows, no matter how long you’ve used it, we’ll replace it. This confidence is our long-term promise to consumers.

Clear Case not only gave consumers a new option, it reshaped the market. Competing brands soon followed with anti-yellowing products. What was once considered normal became unacceptable.

A reflection of our brand’s spirit

From the early misstep of PlayProof to the breakthrough of Clear, this was a journey of exploration, learning, and persistence.

Clear Case is more than just a product. It embodies RHINOSHIELD’s philosophy:

“To set new standards through challenges, and to change the rules of the market with innovation.”
