If you’re reading this, you’re probably already well aware about the use cases for the AirTag, but if you’re looking for more ways to take advantage of this device and get your money’s worth, discover 9 Different Ways to Use Your AirTag.

Getting to the main topic and the reason you clicked this article, let’s first get some of these questions out of the way and then expand the answers in the following paragraphs: Are AirTag batteries replaceable? Yes. Can you recharge the AirTag battery? No. But why? Keep reading to find out!

How do you know if you need to replace the battery?

You can check this with 2 simple steps:

1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Select the AirTag you want to check the battery level for. The battery level of your AirTag will be displayed under its name in the app.

Alternatively, you can check the battery level of your AirTag by pressing down on the AirTag and holding it close to your iPhone or iPad. A notification will pop up on your device displaying the battery level.

If you’re worried that your AirTag might suddenly turn off completely without you having enough time to find it to replace the battery, no worries, if the battery level is low, the AirTag will gradually shutdown over an extended period of time and you will receive a notification on your iPhone or iPad indicating that the battery needs to be replaced.

How to replace your AirTag battery?

We mentioned in the beginning of this article that the AirTag batteries are not rechargeable, but you might be wondering why and if there’s really no way to recharge it. You kind of can, however, it’s much more complicated than what it’s worth, we recommend to save your time and simply replace the battery.

Follow these steps to pop in a new battery for your AirTag, as directed by Apple:

    1. Press down on the steel cover of the AirTag and rotate it counterclockwise till the end.
    2. Remove the cover.
    3. Remove the battery.
    4. Replace with new battery, with the positive (+) side facing up.
    5. Reinstall the cover by aligning the 3 tabs to the 3 slots on the body.
    6. Rotate the cover clockwise until the end.

What type of battery does the AirTag use?

The AirTag uses the CR2032 lithium 3V batteries, which are 20mm coin-like batteries, commonly used in smaller household appliances and tools. The reason we do not recommend trying to recharge it is because you’d need a specialized charger, and it could be potentially dangerous to try without knowing exactly what you’re doing, so we highly recommend just getting a new set of batteries and discarding the old ones once they’re all used up.

How long does the battery last on an AirTag

According to Apple’s official website, the AirTag battery can last up to or more than a year, however, the actual life span can vary depending on the environmen and usage. After 2 years of being in the market, users report that it usually lasts around one year before your AirTag needs a battery replacement.

What are the advantages of using CR2032 batteries?

      There are several advantages:

      1. It can power your gadget for a long period before needing to be changed because it has a relatively high capacity (~220 mAh).
      2. It may be employed in several devices because of the wide working temperature range it possesses.
      3. The packaging won't take up much room in your junk drawer or wherever you keep them because of its small size.
      4. It is simple to obtain replacements online or at your local store, as it has grown more and more popular over the past several years, becoming the energy source for watches, automatic car keys, calculators, toys, sport goods, and many more.

        Are Apple AirTags waterproof?

If you’ve ever wondered "Can AirTags get wet?" well, the answer is yes, but in case you’re actually wondering "Are AirTags waterproof?" the answer sadly is no. However, good news is that AirTags are extremely water-resistant, with a resistance rating of IP67, which is one of the highest levels of protection against water. This means that they can be used outside when it’s raining or in highly humid locations.

They can also endure submersion for up to 30 minutes and have a limited ability to sustain water pressure. The crucial term here is "limited," and due to higher water pressure a quick exposure to the pressure of water at a depth higher than 3 feet / 1 meter might be significantly more harmful than a prolonged period spent immersed in shallower water. It should be noted that submerging the AirTag at a depth of more than 3 feet / 1 meter of water considerably increases the danger of major damage.

How does temperature affect Apple AirTags battery?

Whenever new tech is released into the market, tech enthusiasts jump at the opportunity to test them in the most extreme conditions, and the AirTag wasn’t spared the same treatment. Aside from wear and tear tests, interesting findings surfaced after putting these little tracking devices under crazy high and low temperatures:

There will be no effect on the device itself under these conditions. CR2032 batteries (the type used for AirTags), have a resistance temperature range of -22º F / -30º C to 140º F / 60º C, which covers most usages within normal situations, yay!

Does Apple AirTags affect my iPhone battery?

Reports around the internet show that some people experience their iPhone’s battery draining quite significantly due to the “Find My” app, which is the one you need installed on your device to track your AirTag. Unfortunately, Apple has yet to release a software update that addresses this issue, however, you can try the methods below to temporarily resolve it:

        1. Make sure that all devices’ are fully updated (including your AirTag’s).
        2. Remove and reconnect your AirTag from your device by opening the “Find My” app -> Items -> AirTag Name -> Remove Item. Then, conn
        3. Restart your iPhone / iPad.

If the issue persists, an alternative option would be for you to turn off the AirTag tracking altogether and only turn it back on when you’d like to locate your AirTag.

          In conclusion...
