It started with a CEO asking "why not?
The idea traces back to RHINOSHIELD co-founder and CEO Eric Wang, who looked at the finished AirX case and asked the team a simple question: why not test its limits with a real record attempt? The early pitches were modest — fifty consecutive 15-meter drops, maybe a durability marathon. Wang pushed back: "If we're going high, let's go as high as humanly possible."
That's how a phone case ended up partnered with the UK's Sent Into Space, the team behind actual high-altitude balloon missions, to send three AirX-protected iPhone 17 Pro units toward the stratosphere.
Inside the drop: -76°F, no parachute, one shot
Under official rules, the phones had to strike the ground as the very first point of impact — no bounce, no soft landing zone, no second chances. Along the way they endured temperatures as low as -76°F, cold enough to make most consumer electronics give up long before impact.
Finding a needle in an Arctic haystack
The drop was the easy part, comparatively. The Esrange drop zone covers roughly 5,200 to 5,600 square kilometers of Arctic boreal forest, and search teams spent two full days tracking the device and case by helicopter and GPS.
Each recovered phone was sealed in an official evidence bag on-site under strict chain-of-custody rules. Only in front of the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ adjudicator were the seals broken and the phones powered on for the first time since landing — both passing every functionality test, including calls, photos, and touchscreen response, with no visible damage to the AirX case.
RHINOSHIELD received the official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ certificate on July 10 at Guinness World Records UK headquarters.
