This 1911 edition, adorned with delicate colors and intricate lines that complement the well-known tale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, features illustrations by George Soper (1870–1942). Renowned for his fantastic depictions of a wide range of rural subjects, Soper's art adds an extra layer of dream-like magic to Alice's fantastical world. Soper created 6 colorful plates and many other illustrations for the book that both pay tribute to Lewis Carroll's original drawings and demonstrate his imagination when re-interpreting Alice's adventure into the 'rabbit-hole'.

In 1890, Lewis Carroll adapted and shortened the Alice tale for a popular new edition himself. That is The Nursery "Alice", which was aimed at under-fives. Sir John Tenniel (1820–1914), one of the most recognizable Victorian illustrators, illustrated the book with 20 bright plates.

Cinderella

"Bring me the biggest pumpkin you can find."

(Author: Charles Seddon Evans / Book: Cinderella)

(Illustrations: Arthur Rackham (1919))

From the British Library collection

Cinderella, one of the most beloved of all fairy tales, has been told and adapted in many versions and languages. Published in 1919, British writer Charles Seddon Evans (1883–1944) expanded the original French tale The Little Glass Slipper and transformed it into a full-length children’s novel that is now a timeless classic.

This retold narrative also features over 40 illustrations by the talented artist Arthur Rackham (1867–1939), renowned as one of the most celebrated book illustrators of the 20th century. Adopting simple silhouette illustrations, Rackham's artistic expression of the story enhances the new ‘Cinderella’, providing a fresh and charming perspective on the beloved story.

(Illustrations: William Wallace Denslow (1906))

From the British Library collection

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) by L. Frank Baum is the first instalment in what would become a huge cultural phenomenon. It was the first fantasy series with continuity provided by the imagined world, rather than by the characters. The illustrations by William Wallace Denslow feature some of the best known scenes from the original facsimile.
